diy poinsettia wreath

So today here's a quick look at the pretty little wreath I made myself over Thanksgiving, inspired by this one that I originally found on Pinterest.  I love the bold colors of the poinsettias, and decided to put my own little spin on things by adding in a couple gold flowers in addition to the red and white.  Perfectly pretty and festive!

Supplies:

  • fake poinsettias
    • I bought a couple of fake potted poinsettias on sale at Michael's, containing something like 5 or 6 flowers on each plant. You can also look for a garland or something similar to get you multiple poinsettias for not much money
  • grapevine wreath
  • pine tree branch stems
  • floral wire
  • hot glue + gun

Instructions:

  1. Prep and trim your poinsettia flowers. Using wire cutters, I cut the flowers off of the little plant they came on, and then further trimmed them down to size to weave in well with my wreath base.
  2. Arrange the poinsettias on the wreath base.  Set up the design you want in advance, so that you'll know what the end product is going to look like.
  3. Glue everything in place.  I pulled out each flower one at a time, squirted hot glue all over the stem, and then tucked back inside the wreath.  Repeat.  And repeat.  And repeat. Let everything cool first before pulling the glue strings off.
  4. If necessary, you can trim or adjust any floral stems that might be sticking out from the wreath.
  5. Optional addition: pine branches.  I was originally planning to just have this be poinsettias, but after assembling it I decided it needed a little something green.  I added the branches by sticking the stems into the wreath and wrapping everything together with brown floral wire to secure it all in place.  A little tedious when your stems are long, but still easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I bought the pine branches and added them on to my wreath later, after I had already put the rest of it together, so they're not shown in these photos.  The final creation is shown at the top, as it looks hanging on my front door.  I'm pretty pleased with the result. :)
