orientation week style

Hey look!  I'm a third year now!  We started school back up with orientation on Monday and will actually start clerkships next week, and I keep finding myself alternately celebrating and looking around confusedly, wondering how we got here so quickly.  In the meantime, Step 1 results won't be released for another few weeks, so please keep your fingers crossed for me that everything went smoothly.

Anyway, for consistency's sake here's a little rundown of the events of the past week + daily outfits, of course.

DAY 1

Monday was for instruction in Basic Life Support [BLS] and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support [ACLS].  BLS was a review from our first year orientation, in which we spent a boring afternoon watching a bunch of cheesy videos about how to perform CPR, but ACLS is more in-depth and geared toward healthcare providers, as it primarily covers how to treat a variety of cardiac arrhythmias and acute coronary syndromes.

DAY 2

Welcome to the hospital!  We started off the morning with a bunch of mini lectures on professionalism, dress code, social media use, etc.  We also got a talk from one of the clerkship coordinators on expectations for the third year - useful info and tips for how to navigate the transition from classroom to clinical years.  We split up into groups for the afternoon, and my group returned to campus to do ACLS and BLS testing.  I passed, which means I'm now qualified to treat you if you go into cardiac arrest in front of me.  So...yeah.  Try to avoid that.

DAY 3

Wednesday started off with a presentation by the rising M4s about the different clerkships, which had the potential to be a lot more useful and informative than it ended up.  We also watched a video and had a discussion on medical errors; the case used as an example was so full of obvious problems, it's so difficult to comprehend how any of it could have possibly happened in real life.  Anyway.  Afterward, my group got lunch at and a tour of the med center, then underwent computer training in the afternoon to set up our access to the health records server.

Thursday morning we participated in an active learning session on professionalism and harassment/etc. in the hospital learning environment.  My group was originally scheduled to meet for lunch in the Children's and Women's Hospital cafeteria before taking a hospital tour, but everything in the morning finished up early so they decided to rush on through and skip lunch.  Like, literally RUSH - the almost-M4s leading the tour didn't even wait for everyone to arrive before setting off.  It ended up being the most useless tour imaginable, so it's a good thing I have a basic idea of where all I'll need to be on Monday because otherwise I would be feeling incredibly confused and turned around right about now.
